Press Release: July 2006

One step closer to Calor Village of the Year® Wales Glory

The village of Wenvoe in the Vale of Glamorgan is one step closer to winning national recognition and a total of four £500 category prizes having been shortlisted in the 2006 Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition.

The aim of the competition is to celebrate the richness of village life across the country and to mark the achievements of individual communities. Villages can choose to participate in up to six different categories and Wenvoe is competing in the Community Life, Young People, Older People and Environment categories.

Wenvoe has been shortlisted in South Wales following scrutiny of its written submission by regional judges. It is joined by St Dogmaels (Pembrokeshire), Wolfscastle (Pembrokeshire), Begelly / Kilgetty (Pembrokeshire), Cwmamman (Carmarthenshire), Rhiwfawr (Carmarthenshire), Wick (Vale of Glamorgan) and Lisvane (Cardiff), all of which have been shortlisted for regional category prizes in the South Wales region of the competition.

All eight communities now face a visit from the regional judging team. This will be an opportunity for villagers to make their communities ‘come to life’ and prove why they deserve national recognition and a share of the £8,500 prize fund.

Following the allocation of category prizes by the regional judging teams, one village from North Wales and one from South Wales will also be put through to the final stages of the competition when the overall winner for Wales will be decided. All the results of the competition will be revealed at an awards event taking place on October 31st in Cardiff and to which representatives of all the shortlisted villages will be invited.

Suzanne Weir, Calor Village of the Year® manager, commented: “We are used to very high standards from Wales’ villages so our congratulations go to Wenvoe for getting on to the shortlist for South Wales. Our regional judging teams are going to have a difficult task allocating category prizes and particularly picking one village to go through to the final round of judging. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the shortlisted villages good luck and look forward to hearing the full results in October.”

Judges are due to be in Wenvoe on Wednesday 23rd August at 9.30am. They will spend no more than two hours in the village.
