Overton Pipped to the Post for National Title

The Wrexham village of Overton on Dee has just missed out on the overall national title in the 2007 Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition.

Overton villagers accept their awardOverton was revealed as the winner for North Wales in July and, as such, was in line for the national title and £1,500 top prize. Since then villagers have been on tenterhooks waiting to hear the final outcome of the competition. The final results were revealed at a glamorous awards luncheon held at Skinners’ Hall in London on Tuesday 16th October with guest of honour food writer and presenter Sophie Grigson, when the Pembrokeshire village of Lawrenny was revealed as Wales’ top village.

The community is naturally disappointed not to have won the national title; however, Overton on Dee still reigns supreme for North Wales, winning the overall regional title as well as the People and Business categories. This brings their prize money total to an impressive £1,500 to go towards community projects, not to mention the kudos that success in the competition can bring to a village community.

The Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition rewards vibrant, self-sustaining village communities which, irrespective of size, have made the best of local opportunities to maintain and enhance the quality of life for all residents. The competition, which is organised and funded by gas supplier Calor, judged villages on four categories covering People, Business, Environment, and Communications.

Managing director of Calor, Alex Davis commented: “I know that Overton on Dee will be disappointed not to have won the national title; however, villagers should be extremely proud of their success in the competition. As a regional winner, the village has achieved so much, and we know that the community’s drive and enthusiasm will spur them on to continue to make every effort to further improve life for everyone in the village in the years to come. We also hope that Overton’s status as the best village in North Wales will inspire them to share their secrets of success with other communities in the area, encouraging best practice.”

He added: “With another Pembrokeshire village gaining the national title after the success of St Dogmaels in 2006, Pembrokeshire really is the county to beat in 2008!”
