Category Guidelines

 The following information is for guidance and inspiration only, it indicates the type of information the judges will be hoping to find out about your community.

People

  • How are young people actively encouraged to participate in community life and events within your community?
  • How are people from the surrounding areas encouraged to join in community life and events within your community?
  • How does your community identify people “in need” within the community and how does it go about asking them if they want help and support?
  • What provisions are there within your community to assist people with limited mobility, older people or people suffering from isolation?
  • What local facilities and services are available for young people in your Village?
  • Does your community have sufficient facilities available for local needs and are there any restrictions on who is allowed to use halls / meeting places?
  • What has been done to improve accessibility to your community facilities?
  • What facilities and activities are available for senior citizens in your community?
  • What advisory services are available within your community?

Business

  • What local businesses are there in your community? (Including mobile services)
  • How do these businesses support your community and how does the local population support them?
  • Do the businesses present any environmental difficulties, and, if so, how are these tackled?
  • Does the community do anything to encourage or help existing businesses or try to attract new ones? If so what is involved?

Environment

  • What environmental / conservation activities do you have in your community?
  • Are there any areas of special conservation? If so tell us about them.
  • Tell us what has been, or is currently being undertaken in your community to help protect and improve the local and global environment.

Communications

  • Describe how people in need of care, help and support within your Village find out what organised services are available to assist them. Give details of these services and how they are publicised.
  • What does your community do to welcome new residents into the community life? How do they find out about your community and what is going on?
  • How does your Village support access to computers and Information Communication Technology (ICT)?
  • Does your Village have a website? If so, what does it look like? How often is it updated? How does the community make use of the site? What information does it present?
  • What measures does your community take to ensure that all sections of the local population, including any minority or ethnic groups, have their say in community life? How do they pass information on to the whole community?

 

Community spirit is a result of a number of factors. To help the judges compose a stronger picture of how your community operates, entrants are also be asked to submit a short analysis (not more than 500 words) telling us what makes your community special. This will explain what your community considers its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its opportunities and threats.
