A Memorable Day

On 3rd July 2006, the Welsh village of St Dogmaels welcomed TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. TRH embarked on a tour of the community as part of HRH The Prince of Wales continued support of the Calor Village of the Year® competition - St Dogmaels being one of the many villages who took part in 2005.

The locals united in celebration as they proudly showed off their village on a day to remember.

Rev. Dorrien Davies, one of the main organisers of the royal visit, said: "July 3rd will be a memorable day for the village and people of St Dogmaels. The visit of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall was anticipated with a great deal of excitement and the village had pulled out all the stops to ensure that this would be a day worth remembering for all concerned.

"The announcement during the visit that St Dogmaels has been shortlisted for South Wales in the 2006 Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition added to all that would transpire on the day and filled the area with a sense of pride, and justifiably so."

St Dogmaels' day in the spotlight is another example of the Calor Village of the Year® competition bringing a community closer together. By working together for a common cause, communities can build a real platform for future development.

Rev. Davies said: "On the day of the visit the village looked at its very best - bunting, flags and painted signs of welcome adorned nearly every building and the flower pots were blooming. As the Royal couple arrived, the community’s warmth and affection was tangible. Applause and children's cheers expressed the gratitude to TRH at being able to spend so much time in St Dogmaels.

"Following a special service at St Thomas’s church to mark The Queen’s 80th birthday, The Prince and The Duchess had first hand experience of the affection and warmth of the local people. A relaxed and informal walkabout made it possible for hundreds of people to shake hands and meet TRH. There was also an opportunity for the village to show off its vitality in displays from different societies, organisations and local businesses.

"At the end of the visit it really seemed that it was not only the villagers that had enjoyed the day, but that it had been as memorable an event for our special visitors. With a huge party and firework display the day ended spectacularly and the community was united in celebration and pride in its achievements."
