Chale, Isle of Wight - Regional Winner 2005
The village of Chale is situated in the south of the Isle of Wight and has a population of just over 700. Two years ago, the community of Chale found itself at something of a crossroads - the village shop was on the point of closure, as was the school which had just 23 pupils. This predicament acted as a turning point for the village, galvanising the community into action. Now, not only have both the school and village shop been saved, but other community projects have been undertaken and Chale is a vibrant village full of community spirit.
The village shop was bought by a local couple who gave it a complete overhaul and also added a post office. It is now a thriving business which employs six full-time and two part-time workers and its turnover has tripled. The school was saved when the community applied for ‘extended status’, which was granted, and it now incorporates a nursery school, a breakfast club and after school activities. Chale Village Partnership was also started two years ago – an umbrella organisation which all village groups can join to promote activities within the area. It currently comprises of 16 groups and meets six times a year, encouraging an excellent working relationship between the different organisations in the village. The Village Partnership also produces a regular village newsletter, the Chale Mail, which is distributed free of charge to every house. Chale also has its own website (www.chale.org.uk) which is a useful tool for newcomers to get basic information about the village.
There is an impressive amount of community activity in Chale for residents of all ages. Younger residents are well integrated into the community and they are encouraged to get involved in the Village Partnership. A requirement for the provision of more facilities and activities for teenagers in the village has been identified and their views are being sought to explore what can be achieved.
