Filkins and Broughton Poggs - Regional Winner 2006/2007
The Oxfordshire village of Filkins & Broughton Poggs really impressed the independent judging team with their presentation which brought the community to life.
A real integration exists in the village between the young residents and adults of all ages, demonstrated during the judges’ visit when all ages were present. The village is committed to improving life for everyone in the community, using questionnaires on a regular basis to gauge residents’ views and carry out actions accordingly.
When residents complete a project or feel they have achieved one of their goals, they are very adept at pulling together and celebrating. Local businesses are also very supportive and work to the benefit of the community, as well as providing local employment. The local shop in Filkins & Broughton Poggs is run as a social enterprise. It is run by volunteers and provides work experience for local schools.
During the presentation to the judges, older residents were shown to take an active interest in what’s going on in the village and how they can support those less able than themselves. Environmental activities in the village, including a scheme by the village shop to reduce carbon emissions, are all strongly supported. The village also benefits from a well maintained website with a keen webmaster.
