Central England

Lubenham - Regional Winner 2001

Agriculture remains an important part of village life for Lubenham, situated on the southern border of Leicestershire. Old Hall Farm, for example, specialises in rearing Simmentals and has won several national championships.

However, new business has also been welcomed into the village, ranging from the California Prune Company to a marketing and multimedia company, creating a diverse and thriving community. Such businesses contribute fully to community life, often supplying prizes or financial assistance for village activities.

This willingness to contribute is highlighted by the village’s Church Wall Project. It was decided that the unusual dry stone retaining wall around the churchyard was in need of repair. The whole village got together to help, whether moving stones or supplying refreshments. Local businesses supplied various skills free of charge including an agricultural contractor and a manufacturing company which stored surplus stone.

Villagers reciprocate the support offered by the business community. For example, Lubenham is home to an internationally renowned quilting specialist who runs workshops that attract students from Britain and abroad, which in turn benefits local businesses involved in hospitality.

Lubenham won the Calor Gas Village of the Year competition for Central England and also the Business category for its region.
