Redbourn - Eastern and Home Counties
Redbourn, situated near the historic town of St Albans, is a very well rounded community, with a population always willing to help one another and a range of facilities and activities that ensures everyones needs are catered for.
Community events are crammed into the villages calendar, such as the Arts and Craft Show, Charities Fair, Strawberry Fair, Horticultural Show, Open Gardens Weekend and the Christmas Windows Competition. As well as these special events, Redbourn has a network of clubs and associations that cater for old and young alike.
The facilities for older members of the community are particularly impressive. Redbourn has three residential developments for older people: Gertrude Peak House, The Woollams and New Forge Place, two of which have resident wardens on site. The village has also set up a Care Group, run by local volunteers, to consolidate and improve upon the care available to people in Redbourn. The group organises social events and excursions and operates a volunteer network that runs errands such as collecting prescriptions and changing library books. In addition to this, the Day Centre, Pop In Club, and Good Companions all ensure that the elderly in Redbourn never feel alone or isolated.
Redbourn is keen to invest in its future which is why the village also has a strong emphasis on providing for the local young people. As well as the village Youth Council, which allows youngsters in to have a distinct voice in the village, Redbourn also has a special needs school, St Lukes, which plays an important role in the community.
Redbourn is this years winner of the Older People category for the Eastern & Home Counties region, in the Calor Village of the Year® competition.
