The Calor Village of the Year® Competition is part of Calor's rural community development programme to engender well balanced and vibrant rural communities. The value and efficacy of the competition has been recognised by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). In 2005/06 Defra joined with Calor to build on the success of the community life element of the competition and boost it even further. Defra's special aim is to encourage the inclusion of all groups and individuals into the fabric of rural community life - building cohesive and mutually supportive communities. Defra's involvement also means that even more rural communities in England will be able to share the benefits of the competition category.
The benefits and aims of the Building Community Life category are publicised at local, regional and national level. Materials and information are also available at www.calorvillageoftheyear.org. Defra's backing means too that there are special prizes for the Building Community Life category at every level of the competition.
There is £500 for every county Building Community Life category winner. Each regional Building Community Life category winner receives £750 and £2,000 is awarded to the community coming through the regional judging to become the 'Building Community Life' village winner of the year.
Feedback from villages over the years confirms how those entering Calor Village of the Year are amazed at the richness of community life that is revealed as they go forward - and the enhanced category supported by Defra will shine the spotlight on even more communities!
