The community of Leigh on Mendip has been celebrating its success in the 2007 Calor Somerset Village of the Year competition with a tree planting day.
Leigh on Mendip Community Activity Project was the overall winner of the 2007 county competition as well as the winner of the Communications category. At the celebratory event, which was open to everyone, four ash trees were planted on the village’s recreation field to compliment the range of native deciduous trees planted on the site over the last 50 years.
The event was one of many being supported across England and Wales by the Woodland Trust as part of its campaign to plant deciduous trees through its ‘Trees for All’ campaign. Gloria Cawood, local County Councillor, was in attendance and presented representatives of the Community Activity Project with a cheque for £1,000 which will go towards their building refurbishment project. Local children were also invited along to enjoy the day and took part in a quiz about the trees on the site.
Village representative, Graham Harris commented: “As a community, we are extremely proud of our achievements in the county Calor Village of the Year competition last year. Therefore it seemed fitting to make a special effort to celebrate our success and it was decided a tree planting would be a great way to do this. We are grateful to everyone who made the effort to come along and celebrate with us.”
As the 2007 Calor Somerset Village of the Year, Leigh on Mendip is now representing the county in the 2008/9 national Calor Village of the Year for England competition, competing against villages throughout England for further success and a share of a national prize fund totaling more than £ 40,000. A first visit from competition judges is due to take place during April.
