Shropshire Village of the Year Winners Honoured
The winning villages in the 2005 Shropshire Village of the Year competition have been honoured at a presentation event held recently at Shirehall, Abbey Foregate. Rob Benson of competition sponsor Calor and Cllr Brian Gillow, chairman of Shropshire County Council, presented representatives of the successful villages with their prizes, which included framed commemorative certificates.
The results of the competition are as follows –
Winner: Little Wenlock
Runner up: Stottesdon with Chorley & Sidbury
Finalists: Highley, Quatt
The competition, run by Gill Porter on behalf of the Community Council of Shropshire, judged communities on six aspects of village life with categories in Building Community Life, Business, Young People, Older People, the Environment and Information Communication Technology (ICT). Thanks to competition support from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) this year, an extra £500 prize money was available in the Building Community Life category. This was distributed between Little Wenlock and Stottesdon with Chorley & Sidbury.
Little Wenlock, as the overall winner of the competition, and Stottesdon with Chorley & Sidbury, as the ICT category winner, are now going forward to represent the county in the prestigious national English Calor Village of the Year® competition with the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level as well as a share in the £36,000 prize fund. They are competing in the West England region of the competition against villages from Avonside, Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire.
