Thanks to competition support from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) this year, there is an extra £500 prize money to enhance the newly established Building Community Life category. This will be split between the six district winners.
Competition organisers, commented: “Congratulations to all 26 villages that entered the competition. Standards were consistently high and the judges had a very difficult task selecting the winners. I am particularly looking forward to celebrating with representatives of all the communities that took part this year at the awards event in November. I’m also looking forward to an even more successful competition next year - I can’t stress enough what a rewarding and positive experience taking part can be and want as many of Avonside’s villages to benefit as possible.”
It has already been revealed that the North Somerset village of Long Ashton will represent Avonside in the prestigious national Calor Village of the Year® for England competition, with Chew Magna competing in the ICT section. More than 40 villages across England will be competing in the competition, which has a total prize fund of £36,000 and a top prize of £6,000. Long Ashton and Chew Magna will be competing in the West England region of the national competition against villages from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. They have until the end of September to submit their entries and judging will take place in October.
