Devon Village of the Year Winners Honoured
The winning villages in the 2005 Devon Village of the Year competition have been honoured at a presentation event held on Wednesday 19th October at Filleigh Village Hall.
The competition is run by the Community Council of Devon (CCD) with sponsorship provided by Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Competition support from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) this year has also led to the availability of an extra £500 prize money in the Building Community Life section of the competition.
Representatives of overall winner Yarcombe and runner up Loxhore were presented with their prizes by Paul Ovey of Calor. Stephen Cane representing Defra also attended the event to present the Building Community Life awards.
As the 2005 Devon Village of the Year, Yarcombe was presented with the Jean Allen Memorial Cup which will be retained by the village for one year. It has also been awarded £500 prize money as Devon’s Building Community Life winner. Loxhore, the overall runner up as well as the Building Community Life runner up, has been presented with £100 prize money. Both villages were also presented with framed commemorative certificates in recognition of their success.
As the overall winner of the competition, Yarcombe is now representing the county in the prestigious national English Calor Village of the Year® competition with the opportunity of following in Kilmington’s footsteps last year and gaining recognition at national level. More than 40 villages across England are competing in the competition, which has a total prize fund of £36,000 and a top prize of £6,000. Yarcombe is representing Devon in the West England region of the competition against villages from Avonside, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. The full results of the competition will be announced by guest of honour Alan Titchmarsh at an awards event in London on Tuesday 6th December.
