Celebration for Avonside's Top Villages
The winning villages in the 2005 Avonside Village of the Year competition have been honoured at a presentation event held on Saturday 26th November at the Rangeworthy King George V Memorial Hall. The competition is organised by the Avonside branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), with sponsorship provided by Calor - the UK’s leading supplier of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Also, competition support from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) this year has led to the provision of £500 additional prize money specifically for the Building Community Life category. As well as looking at how well villages take care of their appearance, the competition assesses communities on six major aspects of village life with categories in building community life, young people, older people, business, the environment and information communication technology (ICT).
Ian Sachs of Calor presented representatives of the winning communities with their awards, which included framed commemorative certificates. He was joined by Sue Rees representing Defra. (For full results of the competition please refer below).
The North Somerset village of Long Ashton is representing Avonside in the prestigious national Calor Village of the Year® for England competition, with Chew Magna competing in the ICT section. More than 40 villages across England will be competing in the competition, which has a total prize fund of £36,000 and a top prize of £6,000. Long Ashton and Chew Magna are competing in the West England region of the national competition against villages from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. The full results of the Calor Village of the Year® for England competition will be revealed by guest of honour Alan Titchmarsh at an awards event being held in London on Tuesday 6th December.
