Northumberland's Top Villages Honoured

The winning villages in the 2005 Northumberland Building Community Life competition have been presented with their prizes at an awards event held at Hindmarsh Hall, Alnmouth recently.

The competition, launched earlier this year following support from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and Calor – the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas, was organised by the Community Council of Northumberland. Representatives of the three successful communities in the competition - Wingates, Norham and Horsley, attended the awards event and were presented with their prizes by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland and Chris O’Bee representing Calor.

The full results of the competition are as follows –

1st: Wingates (presented with £350 and commemorative certificate)

2nd: Norham (presented with £200 and commemorative certificate)

3rd: Horsley (presented with £100 and commemorative certificate)

As the winner, Wingates is also currently representing Northumberland in the prestigious English Calor Village of the Year® competition, with the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level as well as a share of the £36,000 prize fund. Wingates is competing in the North England region of the competition against villages from Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Humber & Wolds, Lancashire, North Lincolnshire, Redcar & Cleveland, Tees Valley and Yorkshire. The Calor Village of the Year® competition judges communities on a total of six aspects of rural village life, one of which is Building Community Life. The other five categories cover Business, Young People, Older People, the Environment and, judged separately, Information Communication Technology (ICT). Wingates is competing in all categories except ICT and will find out how it has done in the competition when the full results are announced by guest of honour Alan Titchmarsh at an awards event taking place on 6th December in London.
