127 Communities Battle for County Best Kept Titles

A total of 127 villages and market towns have entered the 2006 Best Kept competitions in Lincolnshire and now wait in anticipation for first round judging to begin on June 1st.

The competition is open to communities that contain a church or chapel and have a population of 100 and over. It is run by the Community Council of Lincolnshire on behalf of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and sponsored by Calor – the UK’s leading supplier of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), with additional support from Lincolnshire’s District and County Councils, Pennells of Lincoln and Tucann Design and Print.

For judging purposes, participating communities have been split into classes according to size: Class I (population 100 to 500), Class II (population 501 to 2,000), Class III (2,001 to 7,000) and Class IV – Small Market Towns (population 7,000 and under). There is also a fifth class for past winners from the competition’s last four years in Classes I and II. Competition organiser on behalf of the Community Council of Lincolnshire, Teresa Palmer, commented: “Once again Lincolnshire’s communities have responded well to this event and we are all looking forward to the judging rounds as it looks like standards are going to be high. Our judges will not be looking for the prettiest communities - they want to see evidence of community effort. It’s essential that gardens, business premises, signs / notices, trees, hedges, ponds, dykes, churchyards and chapels are in good order as they’re sticklers for detail!”

Villages that are selected to go through to the second round of judging will be visited again during July with the finals taking place in August. The judging for Class IV – Small Market Towns begins in July with finals again taking place in August when the past winners class will also be judged August. The final results will be announced in September and all successful communities will be invited to an awards presentation at Swineshead Village Hall on November 1st.

For a full list of participating communities and further information regarding the competition please contact Teresa Palmer at bkv@cclincs.com, or on 01529 302466.
