34 Communities Compete for County Best Kept Title
A total of 34 communities – five from North East Lincolnshire and 29 representing North Lincolnshire, are competing for prizes in the 2006 North Lincolnshire Best Kept Village and Small Towns competition.
The competition is organised by Sue Franks on behalf of Northern Lincolnshire CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) and sponsored by Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with additional support from local sponsors Fenland Leisure, the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Oaklands Nurseries and Stephen Smith’s Garden Centre. The villages and small towns competing are as follows –
North East Lincolnshire: Ashby-cum-Fenby, Barnoldby le Beck, Humberston, Irby upon Humber and Waltham.
Northern Lincolnshire: Alkborough, Althorpe, Appleby, Barton-on-Humber, Belton, Brigg, Broughton, Burton upon Stather, Croxton & Kirmington, East Lound, Elsham, Goxhill, Graiselound, Haxey, Hibaldstow, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Low Burnham, Messingham, Redbourne, Roxby-cum-Risby, Saxby-all-Saints, Scawby, Ulceby, West Butterwick, Westwoodside, Winterton, Worlaby, Wrawby and Wroot.
For judging purposes the competition separates communities into categories covering Small Villages, Large Villages, Small Towns and Past Winners, as well as providing prizes for the Best Playground, Best Churchyard, Best Community Planting and Best Environmental Project. Sue Franks commented: “We are very pleased with the response from communities we’ve had to the competition. Standards are always very high and we are sure that this year will be no exception. Our hardworking judges are going to have a tough job selecting the villages and small towns to go through to the final round of judging in August.”
Communities will be judged on overall tidiness and cleanliness, how well the community facilities are kept and on the condition of both private gardens and any public planting. The first round of judging will take place in the last week of June. The winning villages will be revealed in September and a presentation event is due to take place on Monday 6th November.
