Presenting to the Calor Village of the Year judges is an opportunity to show exactly what makes your community tick. The Oxfordshire village of Filkins & Broughton Poggs displayed that real integration is at the heart of its community, with village members of all ages playing a fundamental role.
Far beyond the presentation though, Filkins & Broughton Poggs is a village that's committed to constantly improving life for its residents - leaving nobody out.
Questionnaires are sent out on a regular basis in order to gauge residents’ views on key community-related issues - and actions are carried out accordingly. When those actions are completed, and success has been achieved, locals are also adept at pulling together to celebrate as a community!
The continued existance of a local shop in Filkins & Broughton Poggs is a fine example of the community spirit that runs through the village. Where many rural villages have lost their shops and facilities altogether, Filkins' keeps going strong.
The shop is run as a social enterprise, with the help of volunteers who appreciate the importance and convenience of the shop to other villagers. The shop even provides work experience for local school children, helping the next generation to learn about the demands of business while doubtless teaching them much about how life in a small community should be.
The village shop also runs a scheme aimed at reducing the village's carbon emissions - something strongly supported by the rest of the village.
