Stillington - Business Award Winner

Although very rural in outlook, this is combined with an industrial heritage that makes Stillington a unique village community.

Stillington is a very community spirited village, with a large number of activities that take place on a regular basis, as well as village events organised throughout the year. Communication between residents and further afield with neighbouring communities is excellent and there is good mutual support between the village and its services. A well-resourced and accessible youth and community centre hosts many of the village’s activities and events, and residents are encouraged to contribute ideas to the management group.

All parts of the community in Stillington work together to the benefit of everyone, and through this a great deal has been achieved. The village’s young people are well catered for, and local people have raised thousands over the years to provide activities for young residents. Older villagers are supported through a network of help and support, including the popular Stillington Luncheon Club that was started in the village fairly recently in 2003 and is going from strength to strength.

In particular, Stillington’s business community plays a very significant and positive role in community life. The village’s combined industrial and rural heritage means that Stillington is a fairly self-sufficient village with a number of small businesses that are well supported by local people. In addition, two of the larger companies in the area have joined together with local representatives to form the Stillington Industrialist Action Group. This committee ensures that goals are continually being worked towards that benefit the whole community – including the industries.

The village of Stillington is situated north west of Stockton on Tees and has a population of about 1,200.
