 Selborne is a welcoming and energetic village where all levels of the community work together to the benefit of everyone – from individual residents to different age groups, clubs, societies and businesses.
A sense of self-help pervades in Selborne. For example, funding for the recent refurbishment of the village hall, which totaled around £300,000, was raised in just three years through village events, personal donations and local/national funding. The hall now provides comprehensive, state of the art facilities to serve the local community and visitors and can be booked online by residents and non-residents alike. Because of this, residents of Selborne benefit from a wide variety of activities that are on offer throughout the year, including a film club, a youth club and yoga to name but a few.
There is also a thriving business community in Selborne. This is made up of the basic components typical of so many villages – farming, a village shop, public houses etc. However, it also includes some other unique business ventures, for example a thriving arts and craft community exists in the village. Business within Selborne plays a major part in supporting and enhancing community life.
Villagers also benefit from Selborne’s natural environment – the village is situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The community recognises its environmental good fortune and works hard to protect and enhance these assets. The parish council leads the way with many of the village’s schemes to conserve and preserve the environment, with a ‘Sustainability and Environment’ sub-committee and work towards a revised Village Design Statement.
Selborne is situated in the north east of Hampshire, to the east of Winchester, and has a population of abut 600.
