Glenlivet and Inveravon Community Association wins awards for Older People and Business at Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards

Glenlivet and Inveravon Community Association has won the Older People category and been highly commended in the Business category of the Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards 2005, at a ceremony in Edinburgh today (Thursday 8 December).

Representatives of the community received the award from Communities Minister, Malcolm Chisholm MSP, at an awards ceremony held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC).

Twenty-six shortlisted communities were represented at the annual event, which this year attracted more than one hundred entries from communities spanning the length and breadth of Scotland.

Now in their eighth year, the awards encompass every aspect of Scottish life, providing communities with an opportunity to gain recognition and reward for its efforts. Their aim is to stimulate local people to take responsibility for their communities and enhance them for common good.

In determining the outcome of the awards the judges sought best practices within communities, which could be used as examples for others throughout Scotland.

Commenting on the community’s success, Hamish Husband, Calor Scottish Community of the Year Manager said, “Glenlivet and Inveravon is a great example of how a rurally remote community has to pull together to not only creatively seek business opportunities but also to support the needs of those living there.

“The community has demonstrated a number of original initiatives to ensure the requirements of its older people are met without compromise to their independence. In particular the car scheme, put in place to overcome the lack of adequate public transport, gives elderly residents the freedom to visit the doctor or hospital on their own esteem.

“The judges were also particularly impressed with the community’s ‘Tea in the Park’, a month-long business venture which brings together local arts and crafts whilst drawing a number of tourists to the area and putting a new event on the calendar. The people of Glenlivet and Inveravon are clearly proud of their community and should be justly proud of their achievements.”

In addition to winning the Older People category and being highly commended in the Business category, Glenlivet and Inveravon Community Association were commended for Younger People and Environment.

Since launching in 1998 the awards, which are supported by Calor Scotland in association with Communities Scotland and backed by The Association of Scottish Community Councils (ASCC), The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scottish Business in the Community (SBC) and The Robert Gordon University (RGU), have been entered by more than a third of all Scottish communities from the Borders to Shetland, as well as all the country’s major urban areas.

The award’s categories include environment, business, younger people, older people and community life, as well as a stand-alone award for community websites. Judging the awards were representatives of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scottish Business in the Community (SBC), Communities Scotland, the Association of Scottish Community Councils (ASCC) and The Robert Gordon University and a Community Council Support Officer for a local authority.
